Short and simple piece of ‘old school’ melodic electronica.

Almost all of the sounds, (apart from drums and percussion), were created here:

Nantes: The Haunted Swing

An original composition based around a field recording from Nantes, France…

Original field Recording (Gavin Prior):

Re-Imagining:

This was created by chopping up the original and processing the various fragments through granular sampler transformers in Reaktor 5. Only the original field recording was used; no other sounds were added…

  • Travelizer was used to introduce elements of pitch to the piece
  • Random Step Shifter was used to add extra rhythmic elements.
  • Grainstates was the ensemble used to create the general background ebb and flow + the ‘new’ swing sound.

The final mix was processed through a chain of modules in Native Instrument’s Guitar Rig and then mastered with Izotope Ozone 4.

This piece was composed for the ‘Cities and Memory’ website run by Stuart Fowkes…

Cities and Memory is a global field recording & sound art work that presents both the present reality of a place, but also its imagined, alternative counterpart – remixing the world, one sound at at time.

Every faithful field recording document on the sound map is accompanied by a reworking, a processing or an interpretation that imagines that place and time as somewhere else, somewhere new.

More information on the location of the field recording used in this composition can be found here:

Music in the Castle of Heaven

An original composition based around a field recording from Hamburg…

Original field Recording:

Re-Imagining:

The title of the re-imagined version comes from the book of the same name by John Eliot Gardiner – a study of JS Bach.

Everything in the remix comes from the original field recording; nothing has been added.

The opening motif was created from three short audio snippets – time-stretched, re-pitched and generally mangled in some of Reaktor 5’s granular ensembles. The rippling pad that enters later is actually the complete original track processed through the granular capabilities of Reaktor 5.

As well as internal effects within Reaktor, Camel Audio’s ‘Camel Space’ was used extensively as a multi-effects unit and the whole track was mastered using Izotope Ozone 4.

Sax and the City: The Lonely Busker

An original composition based around a field recording from Amsterdam…

Original field Recording:

Re-Imagining:

I’ve tried to ‘get inside the head’ of the sax-playing busker…the piano motifs and synth lines are meant to represent his thoughts. Beyond his headspace you hear the dislocated ebb and flow of the city; even the sound of his own saxophone is in the distance as if he’s performing automatically and not really focused on it.

Piano sound comes from Kontakt 5 – ‘Giant’ module.

Synth line was created in Reaktor’s Prism.

Original recording was mainly processed using CamelSpace by Camel Audio:

Reverb  //  Stereo Delay  //  Auto pan  //  BP filter ( ongoing LFO style modulation of settings that ‘push’ and ‘pull’ at the city sounds)

Mastered with Izotope ozone 4.

When the Day is Dark and Rainy…

I’m in the middle of a long, difficult project and little musical doodles are a great way of keeping me sane! :0)

This is a short piano improv that came straight from a little messing about with the chords to a classic old rock song….any guesses?

UTOPIA Album: Cities and Memory

Cities and Memory: Utopia takes one of English literature’s great works of imagination, Thomas More’s Utopia and creates something new from the collective imagination of artists around the world – an entirely new Utopia of sound.

Using a woodcut map from the second printed edition of Utopia from 1518, we divided it into 30 grid squares. Sound artists each took a small section of the imagined country of Utopia, and created a new soundscape imagining how that place (and the society living in it) might sound.

This is just a small selection of the Utopia sounds from the project – you can explore them all at the interactive map atwww.citiesandmemory.com/utopia
